PAGAN LADY NECKLACE
Lampwork Glass Bead Making Techniques

*two places remaining*

Tutor: Julie Ann Denton (Switzerland) website

1,000 years ago a Viking Lady of great standing inherited an heirloom which had been passed down through the family line for 500 years. The beads were purchased over half a Millennium through trade during ‘Viking’ journeys across Europe. When ‘The Pagan Lady’ died, this precious necklace was buried with her. Archaeologists discovered her remains in the Isle of Man, and Julie Anne Denton was commissioned by Manx National Heritage to study and recreate this 52 bead necklace.

It consists of 6 amber beads, 44 glass, one jet and one faience. Julie would like to share the techniques developed from this exciting project with the wider glass Community as well as the history surrounding the Pagan Lady, her story and how the beads where originally created.  Julie will show you how to age beads, make 1,500 year old murrini, mix your own colours, use glass enamels and powders and mimic aged amber. No matter what your skill level, by the end of this class you will leave with your own replica Pagan Lady necklace.

Tutor: Julie Ann Denton (Switzerland) website

This class is designed to gently introduce the bead maker to quirky off mandrel forms. Starting in soft glass you will learn a variety of techniques including how to ‘gather’, how to work with scissors and scaled up ‘mashers’, how to make use of the ‘glass tripod’ to create a stand for your piece, ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ punties are necessary depending on the style of work and ‘auto-annealing’ whilst you work is a learnable necessity. Towards the end of day one we shall begin to create a larger scale piece of sculpture in components, which take the form of a mythical flower. This shall be made with borosilicate glass and it will focus on the use of multiples as a way to create a more complex form, we will utilise glass ‘bridges’ to help us construct the form easily and the flower will demonstrate just how versatile borosilicate glass can be. Whilst the flower is annealing we shall create a number of small borosilicate objects including a heart pendant which will allow us to delve into the extraordinary colour palette which borosilicate has to offer.

'Modern' stitches are structurally different to the ones seen on the Elizabethan/Jacobean/Stuart objects. Therefore the techniques used in this era were also different.

During the workshop, Jacqui will share this research work with students (lots of lovely photos- but sadly no actual C16-17th examples!). You will learn about the historical context of this work, before trying your hand at some of the stitches, starting work on your very own 'spot' sampler - a visual storehouse of patterns and stitches - a valuable and vital tool for any Elizabethan lady.
