BEGINNERS
GLASS BEAD MAKING & SILVER WIREWORK

Tutor: Tracey Bell

An opportunity to make your own lampwork glass beads and incorporate them into wearable pieces of jewellery. Day one will be spent making basic round beads with some surface decoration in the colour palette of your choice. On the second day we will use cold wirework techniques in solid sterling silver wire and make earrings, pendants, bracelets and/or necklaces to your own simple designs using your beads.


Our studio is equipped with five Nortel Minor Burners running from an oxygen propane set up, all beads are annealed using our Paragon Bluebird kiln and we have a full stock of Plowden & Thomson, Effetre and Borosillicate glasses. We also offer 'open studio time' for anyone who has completed a two day introductory course at £10 per hour, so you can continue to explore your new skills without the need to set up at home.

GLASS BEAD MAKING

Fuming in silver, sand blasting and engraving

We are going to make soft glass beads that vary in shape and size. We will cover these beads in powders and/or we’ll fume them using pure silver. Once the beads have been annealed and cooled, we will mask them and cut out relief designs onto them (simple and intricate) and sandblast and engrave the beads, then we will bring them up to temperature in the kiln and we will fire polish them. I will teach you how a sandblaster works so as you are able to go home and set one up, or at least hire one and happily u se it knowing you’re following the correct procedure. You will learn how to create sublime beads with careful powder application. Beginners and intermediates welcome. By the end of this class you will have some truly amazing one off beads.

FELTED KNITTING

Using very basic hand knitting techniques with thick yarn on large needles, you will knit oversized hats or shoes (in clog or ballerina style). You will finish and felt your kits in your washing machine at home. An incredible and addictive technique applicable to all sorts of fun garments.

Only very basic knitting experience required!

If you’ve always wanted to have a go, or just want to see if its for you this is your chance to take a one day reduced rate ‘taster’ class! You will learn the basic principles of working safely and understanding your materials.  There will be  ample opportunity to try several shapes of bead and work in your choice of colours, as well as some basic surface decoration.

Ever popular, this two day class with a professional silver
smith is aimed at complete beginners. Starting with sheet metals and expert guidance you will learn to cut, shape, solder, bezel set stones and polish to make small items of jewellery, a sugar spoon or other trinkets and keepsakes to your own designs. You are welcome to work in gold by prior arrangement.

£75 for two days.

WOODCARVING

Many people love the beauty and tactile quality of wood and this course is an opportunity for complete beginners or for those with experience to unlock their imagination and, with practical help, to develop their creative and practical skills so they are able to express their ideas in the magical world of wood. Your tutor is a professional sculptor and teacher of many years’ experience whose work can be found in stately homes and collections around the world. During your course you will work on your own project, agreed in advance, which may be a simple relief carving or an in-the-round carving such as a bird or small animal. Or you may prefer to try ornamental decorative carving or lettering!

You will learn about the different types of carving, safety considerations, tools and different methods of sharpening them, finishing techniques for different  effects, problems we all have – and how to overcome them ..! Students are shown how design can enhance their work and their pleasure in what they create.

Tools, equipment and materials are provided but timber may be charged at cost – usually £10 - £15. Students who have their own tools are asked to bring them as it is helpful to see how they have been used. Students are advised not to buy tools before their course; we do not sell them but can certainly help you save money!

MILLINERY

On this two day course you will work with a professional milliner to make a brimmed hat on wooden blocks. You will have opportunity to use sinamay, silk, velvet, feathers and veiling amongst other things. Alternatively you may wish to make a small hat and retrim an existing brimmed hat. Materials and trims available from the tutor. Special orders or requirements should be discussed in advance with the tutor. Approximate cost of materials for a brimmed hat £15.

ENGLISH 'SQUAREWORK' BASKET

Using traditional English basketry ‘squarework’ techniques, make a trug for collecting garden produce. Weave a flat bottomed basket with slightly raised, curved sides, or for those with some experience of making baskets a deeper one with corner posts and square corners suitable for carrying potatoes or apples. If you choose the first version there will also be time to make chunky contemporary style round platter that can be used to display cheese or for bread rolls or just looks good hung on the wall.

Sample the delights of lampwork glass bead making and then incorporate your creations as the focal point of a long elegant tassel, or if you prefer, produce a clutch of tiny key tassels.  Choose from a selection of natural silks and  high quality rayons to compliment the luminosity of your glass beads. No experience in either field is necessary, this course is suitable for complete beginners or those with some knowledge.

SUSSEX TRUG

Learn the secrets of hand-crafting traditional steamed Sussex Garden trugs made of ‘cricket bat’ Willow and Sweet Chestnut under the instruction of a traditional Sussex trug maker. You will cleave the timber, shape panels, frame and handle with a drawknife, then steam the Chestnut and soak the Willow before assembling your trugs with copper nails. This very special and rarely seen course which employs only hand tools and where you will construct your trugs from tree to finish. All tools are provided and no experience is necessary.

BOTANICAL WATERCOLOURS

Local artist Jane Watkins will lead you into the magical world of botanical illustration, demonstrating how she captures the minute detail of a spring flower first using pencil then bringing it to life with watercolours. You will work with Jane to produce your own card-sized piece which can be reproduced at a later date for greetings or postcards, or simply framed to enjoy.

BEADMAKING
FROM
RECYCLED GLASS

Two days of fun and experimentation creating individual and quite unique glass beads from shards of scrap glass.  We will use bottle glass, stained glass scrap, broken blown glass ornaments, greenhouse glass and even vintage and antique scraps dug up from the garden. Emphasis will be on working safely using the propane oxygen torch set up/kiln and understanding your materials. The course will conclude making up some of your beads into a wearable item such as a pendant or earrings using solid sterling silver wire. No prior experience necessary.

Precious Metal Clay has been made By Mitsubishi Materials since the early 1990s. Precious Metal Clay or PMC as known, is fine silver or gold particles mixed with an organic binder forming a clay texture,this can be molded ,textured and carved and when dried it is fired and the binder burns away leaving fine silver 99.9 % pure. It is a fantastic product that is very exciting as it can be shaped with very simple tools and can be used with lots of different mediums. PMC comes in clay form, paste, syringe and sheet form

STAINED GLASS PANEL

Explore the diversity of stained glass panels - using copper foil, lead work and incorporating traditional hand painting (fixed by kiln firing the glass). A voyage of discovery through each of these fascinating techniques culminating in a finished panel, up to a square foot in size (larger pieces can be started but will not necessarily be completed in the two days). This class is suitable for complete beginners as well as improvers.

MOULDED RUSH BASKET

Using top quality rush from Linda’s own beds and other easily found materials, you will weave on moulds to give pleasing and useful shapes. Rush is soft and easy to handle, unlike willow which is less forgiving on the hands.  This medium lends itself to flexible forms and you will have the choice of making items such as a basket, hat, lidded jewellery box, round bread basket or A4 folder.

This two-day course for those completely new to ‘lamp or flame working’ will cover all you need to know to work with knowledge and safety whilst learning to make beautiful glass beads. There will be a chance to try many decoration techniques and as control improves, different bead shapes, use of frit, silver and gold leaf, using stringers for decoration and as tools. The course also includes health and safety issues and necessary technical information such as annealing and expansion coefficients

Ply – Splitting has traditionally been used to make camel girths & animal regalia in Rajasthan & Gujarat, India.

‘HOOK ONE & SCRUMBLE’

Basic crochet, simple stitches and techniques covered for beginners and anyone who has not picked up a hook for years.  We will experiment with different size hooks and many different yarns.  The second day will be more experimental.  Using the basic stitches and many of the modern fancy and textured yarns in an informal way to create SCRUMBLES. Working towards a finished fabric that could be the start of a cushion, bag or garment. Very informal and lots of fun.

'DECK THE HALLS'
Festive Garlands & Wreaths

We will be making simple, traditional Christmas rope garlands and door/wall wreaths using both fresh and dried foliage and fruits.  You will learn how to make the basic garland and wreath bases and then adorn them to your own design using your choice of materials and the finishing touches of festive ribbon and trim.  No previous expertise is necessary to produce stunning results.

Kumihimo using Takadai
(Japanese Braiding)

The Takadai, the largest & most ingenious of the Japanese Kumihimo equipment, is used to make oblique interlaced braids. These can be single or two layered, of plain, twill or repp structure or a combination. This four day course gives students the opportunity to follow a structured programme & become familiar with the therapeutic working rhythms, textures, shapes & future potential for belts, jewellery, soft furnishing trims etc. For those with some experience, a personal tailor-made scheme can be arranged.

BATIK

Batik is colourful and fun, this is a wonderfully exciting technique for anyone who enjoys colour, no experience is necessary—just come and experiment!

Using wax and dyes you will produce pieces of cotton fabric in wonderful colours with quite dramatic effects on the theme of your choice.

Penny has taken workshops at the Eden project and is known for her painted batik work based on flower heads, particularly alliums and poppies, she sells in many galleries, is a member of the appledore crafts company and exhibited in
Rome as well as extensively in the UK.

CANE SEATING

Restore a cane chair or stool, using rattan cane in the traditional six way Victoria pattern. A two day course for beginners or improvers. Just bring along your chair cleaned and ready to go. Brenda is a professional chair seater with over 23 years experience and will help you choose the right method for your chair dependant on the shape and style.

Stone Carving - lettering

A two day class where you will learn about different types of stone, lettering and techniques. You will practice different lettering and progress to making a finished slate piece using your initials, as a name plate or house number , you may even gild the lettering if your time allows. Returners may like to try raised lead and monumental lettering.

OAK SWILL

A very special opportunity to learn the secrets of hand crafting a traditional lakeland oak swill. Cleaving, boiling and riving the oak into strips, you will then steam and bend hazel rods into the oval rim, dressing and
shaping the ribs and weavers to complete your swill. No previous experience is required!
