GLASS
BEAD MAKING & SILVER WIREWORK

An opportunity to make your own lampwork glass beads and incorporate them into wearable pieces of jewellery. Day one will be spent making basic round beads with some surface decoration in the colour palette of your choice. On the second day we will use cold wirework techniques in solid sterling silver wire and make earrings, pendants, bracelets and/or necklaces to your own simple designs using your beads.

Our studio is equipped with five Nortel Minor Burners running from an oxygen propane set up, all beads are annealed using our Paragon Bluebird kiln and we have a full stock of Plowden & Thomson, Effetre and Borosillicate glasses. We also offer 'open studio time' for anyone who has completed a two day introductory course at £10 per hour, so you can continue to explore your new skills without the need to set up at home.

GLASS BEAD MAKING
Fuming in silver, sand blasting and engraving

We are going to make soft glass beads that vary in shape and size. We will
cover these beads in powders and/or we’ll fume them using pure silver.
Once the beads have been annealed and cooled, we will mask them and cut
out relief designs onto them (simple and intricate) and sandblast and engrave
the beads, then we will bring them up to temperature in the kiln and we
will fire polish them. I will teach you how a sandblaster works so as you
are able to go home and set one up, or at least hire one and happily u se
it knowing you’re following the correct procedure. You will learn
how to create sublime beads with careful powder application. Beginners and
intermediates welcome. By the end of this class you will have some truly
amazing one off beads.

FELTED KNITTING

Using very basic hand knitting techniques with thick yarn on large needles, you will knit oversized hats or shoes (in clog or ballerina style). You will finish and felt your kits in your washing machine at home. An incredible and addictive technique applicable to all sorts of fun garments.

a brimmed hat on wooden blocks. You will have opportunity to use sinamay,

ENGLISH 'SQUAREWORK' BASKET

Using traditional English basketry ‘squarework’ techniques, make a trug for collecting garden produce. Weave a flat bottomed basket with slightly raised, curved sides, or for those with some experience of making baskets a deeper one with corner posts and square corners suitable for carrying potatoes or apples. If you choose the first version there will also be time to make chunky contemporary style round platter that can be used to display cheese or for bread rolls or just looks good hung on the wall.

Many people love the beauty and tactile quality of wood and this course is an opportunity for complete beginners or for those with experience to unlock their imagination and, with practical help, to develop their creative and practical skills so they are able to express their ideas in the magical world of wood. Your tutor is a professional sculptor and teacher of many years’ experience whose work can be found in stately homes and collections around the world. During your course you will work on your own project, agreed in advance, which may be a simple relief carving or an in-the-round carving such as a bird or small animal. Or you may prefer to try ornamental decorative carving or lettering!
You will learn about the different types of carving, safety considerations, tools and different methods of sharpening them, finishing techniques for different effects, problems we all have – and how to overcome them ..! Students are shown how design can enhance their work and their pleasure in what they create.
Tools, equipment and materials are provided but timber may be charged at cost – usually £10 - £15. Students who have their own tools are asked to bring them as it is helpful to see how they have been used. Students are advised not to buy tools before their course; we do not sell them but can certainly help you save money!

SUSSEX TRUG

Learn the secrets of hand-crafting traditional steamed Sussex Garden trugs
made of ‘cricket bat’ Willow and Sweet Chestnut under the
instruction of a traditional Sussex trug maker. You will cleave the timber,
shape panels, frame and handle with a drawknife, then steam the Chestnut
and soak the Willow before assembling your trugs with copper nails. This
very special and rarely seen course which employs only hand tools and
where you will construct your trugs from tree to finish. All tools are
provided and no experience is necessary.

FROM RECYCLED GLASS

Two days of fun and experimentation creating individual and quite unique glass beads from shards of scrap glass. We will use bottle glass, stained glass scrap, broken blown glass ornaments, greenhouse glass and even vintage and antique scraps dug up from the garden. Emphasis will be on working safely using the propane oxygen torch set up/kiln and understanding your materials. The course will conclude making up some of your beads into a wearable item such as a pendant or earrings using solid sterling silver wire. No prior experience necessary.

Precious Metal Clay has been made By Mitsubishi Materials since the early
1990s. Precious Metal Clay or PMC as known, is fine silver or gold particles
mixed with an organic binder forming a clay texture,this can be molded ,textured
and carved and when dried it is fired and the binder burns away leaving fine
silver 99.9 % pure. It is a fantastic product that is very exciting as it
can be shaped with very simple tools and can be used with lots of different
mediums. PMC comes in clay form, paste, syringe and sheet form

has taken workshops at the Eden project and is known for her painted batik work based on flower heads, particularly
alliums and poppies, she sells in many galleries, is a member of the
appledore crafts company and exhibited in

A two day class where you will learn about different types of stone, lettering
and techniques. You will practice different lettering and progress to making
a finished slate piece using your initials, as a name plate or house number
, you may even gild the lettering if your time allows. Returners may like
to try raised lead and monumental lettering.

OAK SWILL

A very special opportunity to learn the secrets of hand crafting a traditional
lakeland oak swill. Cleaving, boiling and riving the oak into strips,
you will then steam and bend hazel rods into the oval rim, dressing and
shaping the ribs and weavers to complete your swill. No previous experience
is required!
