Learn the secrets of hand-crafting traditional steamed Sussex Garden trugs made of ‘cricket bat’ Willow and Sweet Chestnut under the instruction of a traditional Sussex trug maker. You will cleave the timber, shape panels, frame and handle with a drawknife, then steam the Chestnut and soak the Willow before assembling your trugs with copper nails. This very special and rarely seen course which employs only hand tools and where you will construct your trugs from tree to finish. All tools are provided and no experience is necessary.

KUMIHIMO

Beads and braids complement one another. The potential is enormous, as any braid and bead type can be used. This workshop concentrates on Marudai braids, and will cover a large number of different techniques enabling students to combine many types of beads in a range of styles. The main focus will be on “Beading after Braiding” though for the more experienced “Beading before Braiding” and “Beading during Braiding” will also be touched upon. The course will also cover “Beaded Ends and Joins”, thus preparing students should they wish to continue into creating a finished item of jewellery.
This workshop is intended for those with some experience of Kumihimo on a Marudai. Ideally students should be familiar with “Beginners Guide to Braiding”. This allows students to concentrate on incorporating beads into the braids.
Small class numbers mean that students can choose which area they wish to explore, with individual tuition allowing students to progress at their own pace.

Precious Metal Clay has been made By Mitsubishi Materials since the early 1990s. PMC as its known, is fine silver or gold particles mixed with an organic binder forming a clay texture, this can be moulded, textured and carved and when dried it is fired and the binder burns away leaving fine silver 99.9 % pure. This exciting product can be shaped with very simple tools and used with lots of different mediums. PMC comes in clay, paste, syringe and sheet form
This two day workshop in Precious Metal Clay includes all the basics of working with PMC in it’s clay stage, filing, finishing, polishing and torch firing. We will make a beautiful PMC toggle clasp & focal piece to your own design, then link them with sterling silver chain into a necklace you can wear home.

An introduction to the rag rug making techniques of PROGGING and HOOKING At the end of the class you will have observed the different techniques.
You will have tried one or more techniques.
Discussed how to finish rugs and seat pads. You will have started making a project. During the course you can cut fabric into bits about 9cm x 3cm (3” x 1 and 1/2”)and prog them into Hessian. You can also try hooking long narrow strips of fabric to create your own design.
You will need to bring sharp scissors and an apron. Ragging can be quite messy. Please bring any scraps of fabric as well as odd bits of wool this will enable you to experiment. I will have proggers, hooks and cutting gauges for sale should you wish to buy them on the day.
A small project may be a cushion pad or a decorated Hessian shopping bag there will be all sizes of Hessian available.

ELIZABETHAN EMBROIDERY
Sweet Bags: an Investigation into
16th & 17th Century Needlework

Jacqui has been analysing old textiles for many years, and has accumulated a body of evidence about English needlework dating from the 16th to 17th century. (Some of which has been published in her latest book "Sweet Bags: an Investigation into 16th & 17th Century Needlework").
'Modern' stitches are structurally different to the ones seen on the Elizabethan/Jacobean/Stuart objects. Therefore the techniques used in this era were also different.
During the workshop, Jacqui will share this research work with students (lots of lovely photos- but sadly no actual C16-17th examples!). You will learn about the historical context of this work, before trying your hand at some of the stitches, starting work on your very own 'spot' sampler - a visual storehouse of patterns and stitches - a valuable and vital tool for any Elizabethan lady.
