Glass Bead Making - (Lampwork)
(intermediate
class)
* EXTRA CLASS NOT IN BROCHURE*
* two places remaining*

Tutor : Kate Drew-Wilkinson web
Kate will take a three day master class with focus on canes, use of shards, reduction glass, gold leaf, silver leaf, frit, casing, finding ways to achieve more “painterly” work.
For intermediate lamp workers who are keen to progress
"Lamp Work Bead making has taken great strides creatively in the past five or so years both in the British Isles and in Europe.
For some years I felt that the bead makers in the United States and Japan were the masters, the pioneers in this field. Things are changing and I am seeing some lovely work coming out of my homeland, namely England…
Thanks to the information available on the internet and some very special teachers, many of you are now able to supplement your incomes or arrive at the enviable position of earning a living doing what you love, melting glass to make tiny treasures. You know how it is to have a breakthrough, to experiment, to find a new way to express yourselves, and how exciting this is.
We look for ways to move on from the classes and the influences of instructors, to find individuality, a voice of our own.Individuality comes from experimentation, doing what we can to transfer ideas through the flame and into the bead. The further we go into this glass realm, the more detail we demand of ourselves.
am offering a class this summer, inviting you to learn with me how to experiment, how to layer, how to move glass around in ways that may be new to you. Even if some of the techniques I have to offer are some you might be familiar with, I am confident that I can excite you, showing ways to move, layer and overlay the glass, and teach you more control so that you develop your own voice.

We will make our own canes, use shards, reduction glass, gold leaf, silver leaf, frit, casing, finding ways to get perhaps a bit more “painterly” in the work.
I want to work with each individual to help melt ideas into glass. Sometimes the breakthrough can come from a tiny gesture, something we do that changes everything, something that makes you wonder why you did not think of it ages ago!"

Sweet Bags: an Investigation into
16th & 17th Century Needlework

Tutor: Jacqui Carey(website)
Jacqui has been analysing old textiles for many years, and has accumulated a body of evidence about English needlework dating from the 16th to 17th century. (Some of which has been published in her latest book "Sweet Bags: an Investigation into 16th & 17th Century Needlework").
'Modern' stitches are structurally different to the ones seen on the Elizabethan/Jacobean/Stuart objects. Therefore the techniques used in this era were also different.
During the workshop, Jacqui will share this research work with students (lots of lovely photos- but sadly no actual C16-17th examples!). You will learn about the historical context of this work, before trying your hand at some of the stitches, starting work on your very own 'spot' sampler - a visual storehouse of patterns and stitches - a valuable and vital tool for any Elizabethan lady.
